Both parents going through a separation can, as of today, get a free mediation session if one of the parties is legally aided.
Previously only the parent eligible for legal aid could get access to mediation without paying.
The change is a result of a new scheme pushed through by Justice Minister, Simon Hughes MP. He hopes that this will mean that the non-legally aided parent is not deterred from trying mediation which in his words 'works'.
Mediation is covered in chapters 4 & 8 of The Family Court without a Lawyer.
Or if you want to know more about what happens if you choose mediation you can either watch the Ministry of Justice video below or call the National Family Mediation helpline on 0300 4000 636.
